At AustStar we believe that all Mercedes-Benz are special, but every once in a while AustStar Motors' workshop houses a special classic that is hard to come by...
This week AustStar Motors was delighted to have a 1961 Mercedes-Benz 220SB booked in and when it arrived, it did not disappoint!
This car is truly a classic with its nickname, ‘Finnie’ attributed to its unmissable fin tailed shape rear; iconic for a Mercedes-Benz of its time. What is special about this Finnie is it that it has a manual transmission with a rare feature that could be easily missed if you did not know what you were looking for. The Germans use the terminology, “Hydrak” to describe a car of this model. A Hydrak simply means that the Mercedes has a clutch but no clutch pedal. Yep, this 1961 Finnie has a manual transmission with no clutch pedal!
AustStar Motors carried out a standard Mercedes-Benz service while it was here, but overall this beauty is still running as smooth as it did back in the day, which is why this Mercedes-Benz 1961 22SB Fintail is our feature car of the month.
I asked Aust Star Motors to do a thorough and careful job – and they did not disappoint. I took the car for a 30 kilometer drive after the service was done, and I was pleasantly surprised. The engine ran smoothly and quietly, idled well, and climbed hills effortlessly. There were no warning lights or unexpected surprises. Overall I thought it ran better than it did before, despite a fairly major engine overhaul. The car was even washed when I picked it up, another pleasant surprise.- Charles P. | 20 June 2017
